PERMANENT COLLECTION · WING N
EIDOLON
a museum of things that don’t exist
FOUR ARTIFACTS · 60,000 GRAINS OF LIGHT EACH · SAMPLED FROM EQUATIONS
EXHIBIT I
The Mark
ACC. NX-2024-001 · LIGHT, SUSPENDED · DIMENSIONS VARIABLE
Acquired from the working files of a maker known only as nx64. The mark recurs wherever the maker has passed — burned into commit histories, set quietly into the corners of shipped interfaces. The four glyphs are believed to be a signature; the collection has never matched a face to them, and has stopped trying.
On indefinite loan from the internet.
EXHIBIT II
Endgame, Suspended
ACC. NX-2024-002 · POSITION, MID-GAME · 64 FIELDS, 6 SURVIVORS
Recovered from a table at which both clocks had run down. Analysis engines disagree about who was winning, which the curators consider the entire point. The board remembers the game; the game does not remember the players.
Visitors are asked not to suggest moves.
EXHIBIT III
Trefoil
ACC. NX-2024-003 · TORUS KNOT (2,3) · CLOSED CURVE, NO CLASP
The simplest knot that cannot be untied. It has no maker and no date of manufacture: it was true before anyone wrote it down, and will remain true after the museum closes. The institution holds only a local copy.
p = 2, q = 3. The rest is inevitable.
EXHIBIT IV
The Hourglass, Mid-Pour
ACC. NX-2024-004 · GLASS, SAND, DOUBT · ARRESTED AT T = NOW
Seized at the moment of its own argument: the upper chamber draining, the lower accepting, the stream between them neither falling nor still. Conservators report that the sand never settles and never runs out.
The exhibit closes when it finishes. It has never finished.
